High School GPA Calculator
Calculate your unweighted GPA from this semester’s grades — and if you already have a cumulative GPA from prior semesters, combine it in for your true running total.
How Unweighted GPA Is Calculated
An unweighted GPA treats every class equally on a standard 4.0 scale — an A is worth 4.0 whether it’s in gym class or AP Chemistry. To calculate it, each grade is converted to a grade point (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0, with pluses and minuses adjusting by 0.3), multiplied by the course’s credit hours, then all of that is added up and divided by total credit hours.
The “cumulative” part matters once you’re past your first semester. Colleges and transcripts don’t just look at one term — they want your GPA across everything you’ve taken so far. This calculator lets you enter your prior cumulative GPA and total credits, then blends in this semester’s grades to give you an accurate running total, not just a single-semester snapshot.
If this is your first-ever semester, just leave the prior GPA and credits at 0 — your cumulative GPA and semester GPA will be the same number.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA caps every class at a 4.0, regardless of difficulty. Weighted GPA adds bonus points for Honors and AP/IB classes, so it can go above 4.0. If you’re looking for the weighted version, use our Weighted GPA Calculator instead.
How do I find my prior cumulative GPA and credits?
Check your most recent report card or transcript — most schools list your cumulative GPA and total credits earned directly on it. Your school counselor’s office can also provide this if you don’t have a recent copy.
Do all my classes count toward GPA?
Most core academic classes count, but some schools exclude certain electives, pass/fail courses, or physical education from GPA calculations. Check your school’s specific policy if you’re unsure which classes to include.
Why is my calculated GPA different from what’s on my transcript?
Small differences usually come from rounding, plus/minus grade values that vary slightly by school, or classes your school excludes from GPA (like pass/fail electives) that you may have included here.
